Gołuchów Castle
Storpolen · Poland · Castle
Art collector Izabella Działyńska is said to keep nightly watch over her treasures as the Black Lady of Gołuchów's Renaissance castle.
The French-styled Renaissance castle of Gołuchów was remodelled in the 19th century by Princess Izabella Działyńska, née Czartoryska, who filled it with one of Poland's finest art collections. Legend has it that not even death could make her let go of her beloved objects: as the "Black Lady" she is said to glide through the halls at night, checking that ancient vases, paintings and furniture remain untouched. Caretakers claim to have heard footsteps and glimpsed a dark female figure in the gallery. The castle is now a museum surrounded by a sweeping landscape park.
