Górka Castle, Szamotuły
Storpolen · Poland · Castle
In the Black Princess's tower, Halszka of Ostróg was held captive for fourteen years behind an iron mask – and is said to haunt it still.
At the Górka family castle in Szamotuły stands the medieval brick tower known as the Black Princess's Tower. Here in the 16th century the magnate Łukasz Górka kept his unwilling wife, Halszka of Ostróg, imprisoned for fourteen years; legend says she was forced to wear an iron mask so no one could look upon her famed beauty. Broken by captivity, she died shortly after her husband, and her black-clad ghost is said to drift through the tower and castle grounds at night. The tower and castle today house a museum.
