Just before midnight each night, Countess Teofila Działyńska is said to step out of her portrait – Poland's most famous White Lady.

The neo-Gothic castle of Kórnik, south of Poznań, houses what may be Poland's best-loved ghost. In the dining hall hangs an 18th-century portrait of Countess Teofila Działyńska in a white gown, and legend has it that every night she climbs down from the frame, walks out onto the terrace and meets a rider on a black horse who takes her galloping through the castle park. She is said to walk the earth as penance for demolishing an old hunting lodge where devils guarded the treasures of the Górka family. The legend is so alive that the town celebrates an annual festival in the White Lady's honour.
