Janowiec Castle

In the ruins above the Vistula, Helena Lubomirska appears as the Black Lady – locked away for her forbidden love of a fisherman.

The mighty Renaissance ruin of Janowiec rises above the Vistula escarpment opposite Kazimierz Dolny. Here Helena Lubomirska, daughter of the castle's owner, is said to have fallen in love with a humble fisherman – when her father discovered the affair she was locked in the tower, and in despair she threw herself from the window. Ever since, she appears as the "Black Lady", a dark female figure glimpsed on the tower and walls at dusk. The ruin with its massive bastions is now a museum and one of the most atmospheric places in the Lublin region.
