Krasiczyn Castle

Sixteen-year-old Zofia Sapieha, said to have leapt from the tower on her wedding day, appears at midnight in her bridal gown.

The Renaissance jewel of Krasiczyn, with its four magnificent corner towers, has its own White Lady: sixteen-year-old Zofia Sapieha. Legend says she loved a poor local boy, but her father drove him away and forced a marriage to a rich old nobleman. On her wedding day Zofia is said to have thrown herself from one of the towers in despair, and since 1850 she has appeared at midnight in her bridal dress. In 1945, when villagers sheltered in the castle, many witnesses saw a kneeling white figure on the stairs to the clock tower. In reality Zofia died of natural causes – but the legend refuses to die.
