Moszna Castle

Opolskie · Poland · Palace

In the fairy-tale castle of 99 turrets, an English governess denied rest in her homeland still haunts – along with a maid who leapt from the tower.

Moszna Castle, with its 99 towers and spires, is called Poland's Hogwarts – and has the ghosts to match. An English governess to the Tiele-Winckler family asked to be buried on an island in her native country; her employers buried her instead on an island in the castle park, and her displeased spirit has walked ever since. There are also tales of a seduced servant girl who hurled herself from one of the towers in despair when the young lord refused to acknowledge their child, and of another who hanged herself in the park. Today the castle runs night-time ghost tours among the figures of its legends – including the master of the house, Hubert von Tiele-Winckler himself.
