In the ruins between the lakes, the 'Bloody Devil of Wenecja' guards his treasure – at night come the rattle of chains and the counting of coins.

The judge Mikołaj Nałęcz, dubbed the 'Bloody Devil of Wenecja' for his cruelty, built this castle in the 14th century on the isthmus between the lakes of Pałuki. When the castle burned, legend says both the Devil and his treasures were buried in its depths – and he remained as a wailing phantom. From the ruins at night come the laments of the damned, the rattle of chains and the clink of coins being counted. The spectre is said to guard three chests of gold until an orphan girl – one of the many he tormented in life – comes to claim them: one chest for her, one for widows and orphans, one for the local monastery.
