The Hoofbeats on the Roof at Nystu
Nyland · Finland · Site of legend
At midnight an iron-shod horse was heard running on the roof, down the ladder and into the hall, but nothing was there.
One prayer-day eve the narrator played cards with some men in the little cottage at Nystu in Strömfors. Toward midnight hoofbeats were heard on the roof, and something came running down the roof ladder and into the hall with clearly iron-shod feet. The narrator cried that the devil was in the hall and went with a light to look, but there was nothing. For a long time afterward he dared not touch a deck of cards.
