The Plague, the Prisoners, and the Brewer's Wife
Malmö is not only a harbor city and the Swedish capital of Brutalism. Beneath the concrete, the cobblestones, and the picturesque lanes of Gamla Väster runs a dark geology: mass graves from the plague year of 1712, witch pyres on Kirseberget, beheaded bodies in the mud of Rörsjön, and a brewer's wife whose fury over her husband's remarriage is documented in official records from 1736. On this walk you follow Karna Möller from the dressing rooms of the Hippodromen theatre to the churchyard of S:t Petri, the murder victim in the well at Jörgen Kock's house on Västergatan, the separate quarters for the poor and for suicides at Gamla begravningsplatsen, and you end at Malmöhus Castle, where the Scottish Earl of Bothwell was held prisoner, where the prison governor was murdered in 1837, and where the city's last execution took place in 1900. The walk closes at the harbor, where the Amalthea bombing of 1908 etched itself into the collective memory of Malmö. This is not invented horror. It is documented Scanian legal, medical, and social history that is still said to echo between the houses.
