🇸🇪 Vadstena · Ghost walk
The hospital town
The Vadstena of Birgitta and the incurable
Vadstena is not only the town of the convent. Behind Saint Birgitta's white walls runs a parallel history of hospitals, madhouses and execution grounds, a whole century of suffering and exclusion. On this walk you follow the merchant who walled north magic into his façade, the patients in Sweden's first psychiatric hospital, the grey figures of the asylum, the black nun of the monastery garden, Predikare-Lena who sat in leg irons for twenty years, and the beheaded at Kvarnbacken. This is no invented horror. It is documented Swedish medical and social history that is still said to echo between the houses.
