Sweden has no Pompeii. But it has its own, quieter version. A factory that closed in 1977 and was never cleared. An abandoned hospital. A cemetery far in the north. Five places where the clock, in a sense, stopped.

Here are five Swedish places where time stands still. All can be visited, if you want to feel the silence for yourself.

Gothenburg's Remfabrik webbing factory closed in November 1977 and stands exactly as it was left. Almanacs from 1977 still hang on the walls. Visitors describe the feeling that the workers have just gone home, and there are stories of machines starting up on their own in the deafening silence. Today you can visit it as a living museum.

Out on the tip of Vanäs point, surrounded by quiet parkland and far-reaching views over Lake Vättern, stand three buildings that belonged to the old garrison hospital. They stand empty today, but the place draws those who want to know what happened within its walls.

By the Muonio river in northern Sweden, near Muodoslompolo, lies the abandoned cemetery of Akamella. It was consecrated in 1663 so that local people would not have to travel up to a hundred kilometres to Pajala or Enontekis to bury their dead. Then it was abandoned. What remains is a remote, silent burial ground with a long and puzzling history.

Of the medieval fortress of Gamla Älvsborg, only the ruins at Klippan remain. The fortress served as a military execution site until 1702 and was demolished when Nya Älvsborg was built further out in the river. Among the ruins, people have reported soldiers in period uniforms.

High above Lake Vättern, on a steep cliff just north of Gränna, rises the ruin of Brahehus. The roofless shell is a landmark travellers still pass today, and the view over the lake is as dizzying as the silence between its walls.

There is something about a place left untouched. It asks nothing of you. It simply stands there, and lets you fill the silence with your own thoughts.
