Gedung Setan (The Devil's Building)

Östra Java · Indonesien · House

Amid old Chinese graves stands this "Devil's Building" from the VOC era – where a Dutch woman who took her own life is still said to appear.

Gedung Setan – "the Devil's Building" – in Surabaya was built in 1809 and once served the Dutch East India Company. After the company vanished, Chinese burial grounds grew up around the house, and since the building long lacked electricity, the dark house among the graves earned its ominous name. Local stories tell of a Dutch lady – a "noni Belanda" – said to have taken her own life there in colonial times, whose apparition still appears. Paradoxically, dozens of Chinese-Indonesian families have lived in the building since 1948, and it is now a protected heritage site.
