Ancol Bridge

Jakarta · Indonesien · Bridge

By the bridge at Ancol, the murdered girl Ariah is still said to appear – "the Sweet Girl of Ancol Bridge" with long black hair.

At the canal bridge in the Ancol harbour district of North Jakarta lives what may be Indonesia's most retold ghost story. In 1817 sixteen-year-old Ariah, also called Maryam, is said to have fled a rich man who wanted her as his concubine, only to be hunted down and murdered by his henchmen near the bridge. Ever since, she reportedly appears as a beautiful young woman with long black hair who beckons to lone night-time passers-by and taxi drivers – before dissolving into thin air. As "Si Manis Jembatan Ancol" she has inspired TV series and feature films many times over.
