Room 308, Samudra Beach Hotel

Västra Java · Indonesien · Hotel

One hotel room is kept permanently reserved – not for any flesh-and-blood guest, but for Nyi Roro Kidul, Queen of the Southern Sea.

At this beach hotel in Pelabuhan Ratu, built in the 1960s on the initiative of President Sukarno, room 308 is never let to ordinary guests. Decorated entirely in green, it is dedicated to Nyi Roro Kidul, the legendary Queen of the Southern Sea who, in Javanese belief, rules the waves of the Indian Ocean. Visitors pay to enter, burn incense and meditate in hopes of meeting her, and along this coast many still avoid wearing green – her colour – for fear of being pulled out to sea. The room is one of Indonesia's strangest spiritual pilgrimage sites.
