Taman Festival Bali

Bali · Indonesien · Abandoned site

Balinese belief says spirits move in where people move out — and offerings are still laid among the ruins of the amusement park.

Balinese belief holds that roaming spirits move into the places people abandon, and few places on the island are as abandoned as Taman Festival. Locals still lay offerings among the ruins to stay on good terms with whatever lives there, and the park is regularly named one of Bali's most haunted spots. Part of the reputation is the story of the crocodiles left behind when the gates closed.

The amusement park by Padang Galak beach opened in 1997 with laser shows, a 3D cinema and the island's largest pool. The Asian financial crisis and a lightning strike that knocked out the laser equipment broke it within a few years, and the jungle has been reclaiming the stages, pools and walkways ever since.
