Alley of the Kiss
Guanajuato · Mexico · Alley
In this narrow alley a furious father killed his daughter mid-kiss - couples who kiss here are promised fifteen years of happiness.
In Guanajuato's narrowest alley, two balconies stand so close that lovers could kiss across the gap. The legend tells of Carmen, a rich man's daughter, who secretly met the poor miner Luis from the neighbouring balcony. When her father discovered them, he plunged a dagger into his daughter's chest in a fit of rage, and Luis could only kiss her lifeless hand. Tradition holds that couples who kiss on the third step of the staircase are granted fifteen years of happiness, while those who refuse face seven years of misfortune. The alley's red balconies are today one of the city's most visited - and most sorrowful - landmarks.
