The mummies' twisted faces are said to belong to cholera victims - several of them, legend insists, buried alive.

When burial taxes went unpaid, bodies were exhumed from Guanajuato's cemetery, and the city's dry climate turned out to have mummified them naturally. Many mummies have gaping mouths and contorted limbs, and legend claims that victims of the 1833 cholera epidemic were buried in such haste that some went into the ground alive. Most famous is Ignacia Aguilar, said to have been buried during a cataleptic episode and found with her arms raised and bite marks on her own flesh. The museum above the cemetery now displays over a hundred mummies, and visitors report whispers and cold shivers in its halls.
