House of the Zacatecana
Querétaro · Mexico · Museum
Two murdered men are said to lie buried in the stables — the husband and the assassin the lady of Zacatecas disposed of.
The legend, retold in Querétaro since the nineteenth century, concerns a wealthy woman from Zacatecas whose husband was forever away at his mines. Weary of his absences, she hired a man to kill him — then had the assassin dispatched to silence the only witness. Both are said to have been buried in the stables of the house, and when the woman herself was one day found murdered, people reckoned justice had finally caught up with her. The house is now a museum, where two skeletons displayed beneath a hatch in the floor keep the legend alive, and visitors speak of cold draughts and footsteps in the old halls.
