Durango Cathedral
Durango · Mexico · Church
Night after night, the nun Beatriz appears in the cathedral tower, still watching for the soldier who never returned.
The legend tells of Beatriz, a young novice who in the nineteenth century hid a wounded soldier in her convent and fell in love with him. He promised to return, and night after night she climbed the cathedral tower to watch for him — until one morning her body was found at the foot of the church. No one knows whether she fell or jumped. From the pedestrian street Constitución, many still claim to see a nun's silhouette in the far tower after dark, a sight that has made the cathedral one of Durango's most talked-about haunted places.
