Cerro del Muerto
Aguascalientes · Mexiko · Natural site
The mountain lies like a fallen giant above Aguascalientes — the dead priest who never found peace.
West of Aguascalientes rises Cerro del Muerto, its silhouette shaped like a dead man lying on his back. Legend says he was a giant Chichimec priest who vanished into a hot spring and was later, in the midst of battle, pierced through by an arrow — and that the mountain was raised from the bodies of the fallen as his burial mound. Tales tell of secret tunnels into the hill and of hikers meeting unexplained lights and figures on its slopes. On clear days the whole city can see its sleeping giant, and many still greet him with respect.
