The hacienda outside Campeche was a cattle and henequen estate from the 16th century onward, before it was abandoned and slowly swallowed by the forest. In 1997 the ruins were rebuilt as a luxury hotel: the trees were left standing straight through the walls, and rooms were fitted inside the old shells.
