Founded in the seventeenth century, Yaxcopoil — 'the place of the green poplars' — became one of Yucatán's grandest haciendas during the golden age of the henequen boom. Today the estate is a museum where time seems to have stopped among turn-of-the-century furniture and machinery. Staff and visitors tell of doors opening on their own, footsteps in empty corridors and a female figure said to be a former resident, condemned to wander here forever. The heavy atmosphere of its faded halls ranks among the eeriest in the state.
