In the early 1900s Misnebalam was a thriving henequen hacienda village of around 170 people, until landowner Fidencio Márquez was murdered in 1921 and the decline began. The last residents left in 2005, and many blame the supernatural: the boy Juliancito, who according to legend took his own life there, is said to appear among the houses, and a monk in a black robe reportedly haunts the crumbling chapel. Visitors along the Mérida-Progreso road tell of footsteps in empty rooms, slamming doors and an oppressive feeling of being watched. Misnebalam is often called Yucatán's most haunted ghost town.
