La Popular Bridal Shop (La Pascualita)
Chihuahua · Mexico · Urban site
The bridal shop's mannequin is said to be the owner's embalmed daughter — and her eyes follow you through the glass.
Since 25 March 1930, the same bridal mannequin has stood in the window of La Popular in downtown Chihuahua. She is so lifelike — with glimmering glass eyes, delicate hands and even veins visible on her legs — that the rumour spread fast: beneath the lace gown lies the embalmed body of shop owner Pascuala Esparza's own daughter, who died of a venomous sting on her wedding day. Employees who change her dresses behind drawn curtains swear to details no mannequin of that era should possess, and passers-by insist her gaze follows them and that she shifts position during the night. La Pascualita remains one of northern Mexico's best-loved chilling legends.
