English Cemetery of Real del Monte
Hidalgo · Mexico · Cemetery
Every grave faces England — except the clown's — and the dead miners are said to walk in the mountain mist.
When Cornish miners arrived in Real del Monte in the 1820s, they laid out their own cemetery up among the pines, where over 700 graves still face towards England. Only one points the other way: that of the clown Richard Bell, turned towards the Mexico that gave him his audience. The stories told here include a girl buried alive during an epidemic and found turned over in her coffin, and figures moving through the fog between the headstones. Over the years, the cemetery's caretaker has gathered more eerie tales than she can ever retell.
