From the dungeons of this Medemblik castle, the cries of Christian prisoners are said to rise at night.

Kasteel Radboud, by the harbour of Medemblik, was built in the 1280s by Count Floris V but carries the name of Radbod, king of the Frisians. According to legend, the king had Christian prisoners thrown into a pit of quicklime, and their anguished cries are said to still be heard within the walls. His own daughter, who secretly helped the prisoners, was locked in the cellar with a crown of thorns on her head – and afterwards wore a golden cap for the rest of her life to hide the scars. A witch's soul is also said to be trapped in the old tower. The castle is now a museum.
