Slot Assumburg in Heemskerk is a fifteenth-century castle that today houses a hostel and a baroque garden. According to legend, the lord of Assumburg married an innkeeper's daughter during his studies in Orléans – a woman who turned out to be greedy: back at Assumburg she had counterfeit coins minted in the cellar at night with the help of the servants. When the fraud was discovered, her husband condemned her to the stake, and her mad spirit is said to guard a chest full of coins still hidden in the ground. It is also told that a figure named Aernt wanders the castle's halls, attics and cellars every night at the stroke of twelve.
