Ellertsveld Heath

Drenthe · Nederländerna · Natural site

On the heath where the giants Ellert and Brammert robbed and murdered, their victims are said to drift as white wraiths in the mist.

The Ellertsveld is a vast landscape of heath and sand between Schoonoord and Orvelte in Drenthe. According to the legend, first written down in 1660, the robber giants Ellert and Brammert lived here in an earthen den and ambushed travellers using cords stretched across the paths; an abducted girl was held captive for years until she slew one of the giants and fled. The women they murdered are said to still drift across the field as witte wieven – white veils of mist in the twilight. At the Ellert en Brammert open-air museum in Schoonoord, the legend is kept alive.
