The Broken Castle (Grubbenvorst)
Limburg · Nederländerna · Castle ruin
Around the walls of the Broken Castle drifts the White Maiden, cursed never to leave the ruin.
Het Gebroken Slot – the Broken Castle – is the remains of a medieval stronghold by the river Maas outside Grubbenvorst in northern Limburg. According to legend, a young outlawed nobleman fell in love here with an innkeeper's daughter, but when he saw her one night at the ruin in the company of another man, he accused her of betrayal, took a blow to the head and plunged into one of the castle's crevices. Dying, he cursed her never to find rest, and three days later the girl died of a violent fever. Ever since, the White Maiden in her burial shroud is said to drift over the crumbling walls and along the path down to the Maas at night.
