Manila Metropolitan Theater — Manila · Filippinerna · Theatre

On the art deco stage in 1992, a lady in black appeared – eerily like the actress who died a week before opening night.

The Metropolitan Theater of 1931 is Manila's art deco jewel, bombed in the war, restored and left to decay in turns. Its most famous legend was born in 1992, when lead actress Ella Luansing Tinio died in a car accident a week before the opening of a Shakespeare production: at the final performance a woman in black, eerily resembling her, is said to have appeared on stage before cast and audience alike. Restoration workers later told of phantom performances sounding in the empty auditorium. After a thorough renovation, the theatre reopened in 2021.
