The Riders from the Shingles of Ormsö Church
Läänemaa · Estland · Church
For every shingle cut from the church tower the Devil cried "horse and man!" - and out stepped a rider.
From Ormsö in Läänemaa it is told that Jakob de la Gardie, who was in league with the Devil, was once in great need when he could get no soldiers. Then the Devil climbed onto the roof of Ormsö church and cut loose shingles from the tower. With each stroke he cried "horse and man!", and every shingle became a rider on horseback. The same is told of the castle in Reval.
