Bình Hưng Hòa Cemetery
Ho Chi Minh-staden · Vietnam · Cemetery
On Saigon's vast burial ground, a girl in white is said to flag down night riders — then dissolve among the graves.
For decades Bình Hưng Hòa was Saigon's largest cemetery, a seemingly endless sea of tightly packed graves in the middle of the city. Motorbike-taxi drivers tell of a young woman in a white áo dài who hails them in the small hours, gives an address by the burial ground, and is gone without trace when they turn around — sometimes the fare is left behind as votive money for the dead. Night visitors are said to have heard laughter between the tombs and watched ghost-lights drift across the field. When the city began exhuming the graves for relocation, the stories found new life: thousands of souls, it is said, are now searching for their addresses.
