On Bà Nài hill outside Phan Thiết, a French duke built Lầu Ông Hoàng, the Prince's Palace, in 1911 with sweeping views of the sea — today only ruins remain, beside the hill's ancient Cham towers and old graves. This is classic ground for the legends of the ma Hời, the spirits of the Cham people, said to appear as flickering ghost-lights at night where they guard their buried treasures; those who follow the lights are said never to find the gold, only to lose their way. The poet Hàn Mặc Tử brought his beloved Mộng Cầm here on night walks among the graves, and their ghost-tinged love story has been woven into the hill's reputation forever.
