The Woman in Black stands motionless among the tombs until she lets out one long scream — and Don Juan laments the fortune he lost.

The small nineteenth-century graveyard behind the church of San Fernando holds some of Mexico's best-known figures of that century. Gravediggers and night staff describe two recurring presences. The first is the woman in black: a heavy-set female figure who stands utterly still among the mausoleums and whom several employees have heard let out a long, strange scream before vanishing. The second is Don Juan, a man who moves slowly between the graves lamenting aloud; the story says he was wealthy in life, lost everything, and was finally buried here in a pauper's grave. During the evening tours guides also speak of fast-moving shadows along the wall and whispers nobody can quite catch.
