A woman begs the night guards for a Christian burial — and in one cell La Mulata de Córdoba is said to have sailed away on a chalked ship.

The palace on Plaza de Santo Domingo was the seat of the Inquisition in New Spain and later housed the school of medicine; today it is the Museum of Mexican Medicine. Two figures dominate its stories. One is a woman who steps in front of the night guards and asks for a Christian burial; she is said to have been walled into the building and unable to leave it. The other is La Mulata de Córdoba, the sorceress who by legend was held here and, on the night before her execution, drew a ship on her cell wall, stepped aboard and sailed out through the stone — by morning the cell stood empty. Medical students have passed down accounts of footsteps in empty stairwells and doors onto the courtyard opening by themselves.
