Mexico's largest cemetery, opened in 1874, has two figures the gravediggers talk about. The first is the boy of Dolores, a weeping child who wanders between the headstones looking for his mother. The watchmen say that as long as you do not hear him all is well, but whoever hears the crying has been chosen: afterwards the child returns night after night in dreams, begging for help to find her, so insistently that several people have felt compelled to go back to the cemetery. The second is the soldier Andrés Figueroa, buried here at fifty-four, who still walks his rounds against grave robbers and barks his halt there out of the darkness at anyone who touches a stone.
