Around the year 1600 a narrow alley ran where República Dominicana lies today in the Centro Histórico. Tristán Alzures, son of one of the city's most respected merchants, lived there, and there neighbours began to meet the figure that gave the alley its name: a tall man of pale face, long straight black hair and thick beard, whose gaze was said to burn. The legend holds that he was condemned to walk the earth forever for a sin he concealed until the day he died, and that he stopped night walkers in order to confess it. Whoever heard him out learned the secret but could never repeat it. The alley has long since been swallowed by the surrounding blocks, yet the story remains one of the oldest in the Centro.
