The Porfirian mansion on Tlalpan's main square was built at the end of the nineteenth century by the landowner Jesús Pliego Frissac. It is famous for the legend of Jesús Arriaga, the thief known as Chucho el Roto and described as Mexico's Robin Hood. The story says he carried on a secret affair with Matilde Frissac of this house, climbing the wall to her room by night, and that together they had a daughter, María de los Dolores. Historians point out that Arriaga died before the house was even built, but the legend was revived in the 1960s and has never let go. Staff at the cultural centre housed here today describe footsteps on the staircase and doors moving in locked rooms after closing.
