The hill of Cerro de la Estrella in Iztapalapa is an ancient ceremonial site with a long pre-Columbian history and is protected heritage today. The legend that frightens the district, however, is of later date. It tells of a stooped old man who appears on the slopes at dusk and asks a passer-by to help him up to a cave higher on the hill. The walk feels like an act of kindness right up to the cave mouth — and there the old man turns his face and shows what he really is. In the stories he is the Devil himself, and whoever enters the Devil's Cave comes out changed, or not at all. Young people in the surrounding neighbourhoods are still warned not to climb the hill after dark.
