In Azcapotzalco, where one of the last battles of the war of independence was fought, they tell of Eréndira — the neighbourhood figure known as the district's own Llorona. The legend says she was mother to two young sons, José Alfredo and Mariano, who were drawn to the insurgent cause and never came home. Ever since, she is said to walk the stretch between Parque Azcapotzalco and the cathedral on the square, always the same route, always weeping. What makes the story unsettling is that she frightens no one by force: she frightens by grief. Neighbours say anyone who has once heard her crying across the park never sees the place the same way again. Near the district cemetery a ghost child is said to send cars off the road.
