The painter Dr. Atl lived here and called the phantom monks an everyday affair — and at dawn, cannon that fell silent in 1847 are heard.

The sixteenth-century convent in Coyoacán was abandoned in the nineteenth century and stood empty for years. For a time the painter Dr. Atl lived in the building, and he described the phantom monks as an entirely everyday occurrence: hooded figures crossing the corridors while he worked, so routine that he stopped reacting. The second legend belongs to the battle of Churubusco in 1847, when the convent was defended against the invading United States army. Guards and visitors say that in the hours before dawn dull cannon fire and the sounds of fighting carry from the courtyard, and that shadows move along the walls of the old cloister walks. The building now houses the National Museum of the Interventions.
