Xoco Cemetery

Mexico City · Mexiko · Cemetery

Neighbours say the lament of Senator Belisario Domínguez rises over the graves — the man who wrote the truth and was silenced for it.

The small cemetery of the old village of Xoco, now hemmed in by Coyoacán's motorways, carries one of the district's most persistent legends. Belisario Domínguez is buried here, the senator from Chiapas who in 1913 wrote and circulated a speech openly condemning the military regime — and who was murdered for it. The story handed down among neighbours is not about politics but about a sound: a lament said to rise from the burial ground at night, as if from someone denied his voice. Guards and residents also speak of footsteps in the gravel between the tombs and of lights moving behind the wall long after closing. Many locals would rather walk around the cemetery than past it in the dark.
