A skeleton in torn priestly robes waits on the bridge — and closes its bony hands around the throat of the man who killed him.

In 1649 a bridge crossed the canal where the streets República de Perú and Allende meet today. There lived the priest Juan de Nava with his niece Margarita Jáuregui, and there the Portuguese gentleman Duarte de Zarraza came courting. The priest forbade the affair, the two men met on the bridge, and Zarraza drove a dagger bearing his family crest into the priest's skull before the body sank into the muddy water. A year later the murderer returned to fetch Margarita. At dawn he was found dead on the bridge, his face twisted in terror, a skeleton in rotted, silt-caked vestments gripping his throat — the marked dagger still lodged in its skull. The bridge is long gone, but rattling chains and wet footsteps are still reported here.
