Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris

Mexico City · Mexiko · Theatre

The boy with the diadem bounces his ball inside the headsets and invites technicians to play — sometimes using their own names.

The theatre on Donceles opened in 1918, built by the operetta star Esperanza Iris on the foundations of the old Teatro Xicoténcatl. Two presences recur in the staff's accounts. The most feared is known as the boy with the diadem: through the intercom between stage and control room comes a bouncing ball and a child's voice inviting the technicians to play, and at worst calling them by name. Many avoid wearing a headset alone once the audience has gone. The second figure is a woman seen in one of the boxes, always upright and always facing the stage; those who have worked in the house longest are convinced it is Esperanza Iris herself, still keeping watch over her theatre.
